Big Session-On-Sea is a one night only performance from Oysterband. With loads of special guest coming along to help them out, including June Tabor, Sam Carter and many more to be announced, this is a show not to be missed. This will be your only chance to see Oysterband performing this exclusive gig at the De La Warr Pavilion.
Oysterband make a kind of modern, folk-based British music, acoustic at heart but not always quiet. Everything they have experienced makes them sympathetic to the left, the green and the sceptical; but at the same time they like the rich diversity of tradition. Contradictory? You bet!
They have made one DVD so far and 11 studio CDs; played in 35 or so countries and played jails and political rallies as well as festivals and gigs; and have made some good friends all over the world.
Like many artists, they found it made sense to start their own label, RunningMan.A tie-up with the German company Westpark Music has made interesting projects possible, such as The Big Session, Vol. 1 (2004), a live recording of collaborations with June Tabor, Eliza Carthy, The Handsome Family and others, and a DVD of The 25th Anniversary Concert (2005). “The Big Session” is also the name of their very successful Oysterband ‘signature’ festival that began in 2005 at De Montfort Hall & Gardens, Leicester, and later graduated to agreenfield site.
In 2003 they receive the “Good Tradition” award at the BBC Folk Awards, and in 2005 (as “Oysterband’s Big Session”) were named “Best Group”.
In 2011 they released their reunion album with June Tabor for Topic Records, Ragged Kingdom. Waiting 21 years to make a follow-up to Freedom & Rain may seem perverse, but hey! both parties were seriously busy. Ragged Kingdom gained them 3 more BBC Folk Awards (Best Trad Track, Best Album and Best Group, plus Folk Singer of the Year for June). They toured it very enjoyably through 2012 and the start of 2013 and featured on BBC TV’s Later…with Jools Holland.
Currently they are working on new songs for an Oysterband album to release in early 2014. Even after so long a career, we can’t help feeling that the most fruitful time might be right now.
