Rrose Sélavy, the feminine alter ego created by Marcel Duchamp, first emerged in Man Ray’s portraits in the early 1920s, when he and Duchamp were collaborating on a number of conceptual photographic works.

In choosing Man Ray to take a portrait of Rrose Sélavy, Duchamp co-opted the most adept photographer of glamour on behalf of the 20th century's most celebrated conceptual artist.
