Ian Breakwell sadly died on Friday 14 October 2005. His inspiration and creativity gave rise to both the concept and content of the 'Variety' programme, which is dedicated to him.
As an artist and writer, Breakwell produced a prolific body of work over the past 35 years ranging from drawing, film, video, installation, live performance, theatre, television and radio.
An abiding influence in his work has been the alternative theatrical tradition to that of the scripted play.
As curator of and artist in ‘Variety’, Breakwell's aim was to demonstrate how the traditional forms of variety directly inspire the more adventurous and experimental contemporary art of today.
Ian Breakwell's obituary is in the 21 October 2005 edition of The Guardian.
