Hauschka is the captivating Düsseldorf-based pianist and raconteur Volker Bertelmann. Whether playing grand piano or upright, Hauschka sets himself up so that the audience can see his preparations and the movement of the hammers as he hits each key, creating a hypnotic visual analogue to his music.

Bright, rhythmic, charming, delightful and even pretty... [owing] much to the minimalism of Reich, Glass and Nyman but with a pop brio that is warm and engaging   The Wire

Sarah Nicoll's piano

As an artist, Sarah Nicolls’ explorations of the piano have led her from classical repertoire through contemporary music (premieres with the London Sinfonetta/ Oliver Knussen, the Philharmonia, ASKO/Schonberg, over 40 BBC radio broadcasts) to a new incarnation –  Tilly Automatic, as whom Nicolls now creates her own music.  As Tilly, Sarah is re-inventing the piano: augmenting an already intricate mechanical machine with additional structures.  Motors strike the body and strum the strings, rhythmic patterns are overlaid on acoustic sounds, the motions of her hands and body are captured and turned into electronic sounds and signals, the entire performance creating powerful and mesmeric results.

The performance at the De La Warr Pavilion tracks Sarah’s development, beginning with some beautiful acoustic music by Niccolo Castiglioni and ending with an interactive performance with electronics.
