Tchaikovsky's Eugene Onegin

Eugene Onegin. Tchaikovsky’s masterpiece was also written on the cusp of his marriage, following a passionate love-letter he received from one of his pupils. Later that month, he began work on Eugene Onegin, starting with the famous “Letter Scene”, in which the young, idealistic Tatyana pours out her love for Onegin. Tchaikovsky’s marriage was in tatters after just nine weeks, but the opera remains a staggering achievement - subtle characterisation, lyrical music and taut drama combine, resulting in a work of tragic intensity. Amanda Echalaz, ETO’s wonderful Alcina, plays Tatyana.  ETO’s General Director, James Conway revives his successful partnership with conductor Michael Rosewell (Jenufa, A Midsummer Night’s Dream) for this production with designer Joanna Parker creating sets for both shows.

English Touring Opera is one of the leading opera companies in the U.K. For the past 25 years, ETO has made the diverse richness of opera accessible to as wide an audience as possible. Our aim is to present vibrant, innovative high-quality opera and music theatre to audiences old and new in communities across England. We seek work with regional theatres to stimulate new access, understanding and appreciation of opera amongst the public, whilst promoting and sustaining the highest of performance standards.
