Carmina Burana

To celebrate the De La Warr Pavilion’s 75th Anniversary, we are presenting a special performance of Carl Orff’s best-known work, Carmina Burana.

Composed in 1935, the year in which the Pavilion was opened, the work sets texts selected from the mediæval Carmina Burana mostly in Latin, with some middle high German and old Provençal.  As the wheel of fortune turns, different aspects of life are revealed and related: drinking, eating, gambling, love and lust.  And, like a wheel, the work’s opening number O Fortuna returns to end the work, lamenting how we are prey to fortune’s sometimes cruel twists and turns.  The music is striking for its harmonic simplicity, coupled with a rhythmic drive of deceptively subtle complexity.

The performance will be given by the internationally renowned Philharmonia Chorus, who have made two acclaimed commercial recordings of the work with celebrated conductors Rafael Frühbeck de Burgos and Riccardo Muti.  They will be at full strength, performing the version for two pianos and a formidable battery of percussion, with a brilliant team of young soloists.

Conducting this Anniversary performance will be the Chorus’s newly appointed Chorus Master Stefan Bevier. Stefan says,  'Erich Mendelsohn is an iconic figure in German architecture, and there are several landmark buildings of his in Berlin where I live.  It is a real honour for me to conduct the Philharmonia Chorus in Carmina Burana to help celebrate the anniversary of his wonderful De Le Warr Pavilion.'
