On Sunday afternoons, Sundown Live on the roof sees an eclectic line up of live music and DJs, featuring some of the most exceptional emerging artists in the UK. Resident DJs Benji Buzz and Koopa Nut will follow performances, playing out a masterful pick and mix of musical styles and genres.

Blue Roses is 23 year-old singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Laura Groves. Laura creates music which draws on a wide range of musical loves to create a world of its own.

Blue Roses’ self- titled debut album was released in 2008 on XL Recordings to critical acclaim. Recorded outside of the traditional studio environment, in spaces such as bedrooms and a local piano shop in Laura’s home city of Bradford, the record is deeply rooted in the place in which it was created, as well as in a diverse set of influences including Debussy, Du Maurier, Kate Bush and Joni Mitchell. Recent projects include the creation of a brand new live score for the 1920 silent film Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde, which was performed at the BFI Southbank in March 2011.

“A haunting record, full of unexpected instrumental textures that course beneath Groves’s extraordinary voice and eerie,
elusive lyrics.” **** Sunday Times Culture

From playing fiddle with her dad in Ireland to her time as part of a multi-media band in Liverpool, Peel confounds expectations of the ‘typical’ artist, drawing particular inspiration from her Irish upbringing but with a unique twist on her own Yorkshire roots (especially evident in her use of a brass band).

Her voice is at times bewitching, at times laconic and is as influenced by the still life gaze of Edward Hopper as the arrangements of Nick Drake, Tom Waits, or the expansive pop of her heroes Sandy Denny, Judee Sill and Joni Mitchell.

Alternative/folk-pop singer-songwriter and Mojo magazine’s ‘one to watch’ for 2011, Hannah Peel plays intimate and magical folk pop from her debut album The Broken Wave.

“ In a word, charming” **** Q Magazine
