This promises to be an evening of fantastic music by two of the most energetic young jazz collectives.

Basquiat Strings

Mercury Award Nominees 2007

The Basquiat Strings were formed four years ago by composer/arranger cellist Ben Davis. Ben, who studied at London's Guildhall and Canada's Banff Conservatoire, is one of Europe's top jazz string players.

All the members have been classically trained but have also submerged themselves in the jazz tradition. Throughout their existence Basquiat Strings have been developing their own programme, using compositions of Ben Davis and well known jazz player/composers, through rehearsal, "jamming", and performance.

Basquiat Strings have played as a string section on the following records: 'UPWARDS' - Ty

'ATLAS'- Monica Vasconcelos, Nois 4

'OMINOUS'- Border Crossing and yet to be released records by Darren Emerson, Border Crossing and Acoustic Ladyland.

Most notably, in February this year, they released their own CD with drummer Seb Rochford which was nominated for the Nationwide Mercury Prize for Album of the Year 2007.

The judging panel said, "The lyricism of a string quartet, the groove of a great jazz drummer - an innovative and enthralling album."

Seb Rochford, their talented drummer was previously nominated in 2005 for the Nationwide Mercury Prize for his album with Polar Bear.

Portico Quartet

Portico Quartet

“Their hook-based, jaunty, yet subtly layered music is tailor-made to find friends everywhere.” John Fordham, Guardian

Portico Quartet are four young musicians based in London. Nick Mulvey, Duncan Bellamy, Jack Wyllie and Milo Fitzpatrick met in 2005 as they began studying in London.

Comprised of soprano Saxophone (Wyllie), double bass (Fitzpatrick), Hang and percussion (Mulvey), and drums and Hang (Bellamy), their sound is truly unique, exciting and fresh. Forging contemporary jazz with modern classical tendencies (think Steve Reich and Philip Glass) along with many other genres, they have created an inimitable sound that has been compared to the work of Ben Allison, Esbjorn Svennson Trio and The Cinematic Orchestra amongst many others.

Central to the sound is a new instrument called the 'Hang' that has a tone similiar to the steel pan and gamelan. Cyclical patterns from the Hang combine with grounding double bass and intricate drum and saxophone work to create a style that is all their own and whose appeal wins an ever broadening fanbase.
